Alpine and shoulder-season sleep systems, wind exposure control, quilt vs mummy integration

About

Mountain engineer turned trip leader who optimizes sleep systems for windy, variable alpine conditions. Loves quilts with controlled vents and solid pads.

Core Beliefs

Warmth is earned by the system: bag, pad, shelter, wind management, and fuel.

Background

On a shoulder-season bivy above tree line, my '20F' bag and a thin pad left me shivering in steady wind. The ISO number was right; my system wasn't. Mapping wind, R-value, and calories to a simple pre-trip checklist turned my next summit night into quiet, dreamless sleep.

Perspective

I favor lighter kits only when wind exposure is controlled and pad R-value is stout.
